About Us
This charity has been created in the memory of Raghavendra (Raghu) Nimmala (1988-2014). Raghu became dearer to God at a very young age while pursuing his dreams in America. Raghu was a brilliant son and a wonderful brother. He had such a caring nature, which shone through to everyone around him and will be dearly missed by all the family and friends.
Raghu had been very generous and started contributing to charities for children from his very first job in America. He was very active since his childhood days and enthusiastically participated in many sports and games. Cricket was his passion and he played the game at various levels. He was dreaming of training kids back home after returning from America. Raghu excelled academically , he graduated in engineering from VIT, Chennai and obtained masters from Missouri University of Science and Technology, USA. He was very fond of adventurous sports and went on many trips of this sort in America.
His last trip was an adventurous one and sadly the last one, as it took him away from his family to a world of no return. With the loss of his only son, Raghu’s father Mr. Rama Rao Nimmala, decided to open up ‘Sri Raghavendra Charitable Trust’ , a non-profitable organisation, to carry forward his generosity and serve the people in need, in remembrance of his son. The charity was created in 2015 with the initial aim of providing free medical service to the villagers and extending help to poor students in SivaDevuni Chikkala including neighbouring Primary and Secondary schools.
Philanthropic Activities we’re involved in
Raghavendra’s father and his father’s brothers i.e., Nimmala family, were born and brought up in Sivadevuni Chikkala, a village consisting of 3,000 families with (7) hamlets. Since their childhood, they have seen the sufferings of the people in the village due to the lack of pure drinking water resulting in chronic diseases mostly related to gastro, arthritis, diabetes and heart diseases. As the village lacks qualified doctors, the people are compelled to depend on RMP doctors, who are not qualified to the standards. Effective healthcare is, by far, out of a poor man’s reach. About 75% of healthcare resources are concentrated in urban areas, where only 27% of the total population resides. 31% of the rural population in India has to travel over to nearest cities/towns to get the most vital and critical medical treatment. Poverty obliges them to afford the treatment of potentially life-threatening diseases, which they are not capable of. Mal-nourishment prevailing in the villages makes their situation even more vulnerable. These circumstances due to inadequate health facilities in rural areas leave the economically weaker classes helpless.
Primary education/elementary education in elementary schools is typically the most essential stage of education . The villagers are being deprived of the most basic primary education due to a shortage of efficient teachers, books, basic facilities and insufficient public funds to cover education costs. This inadequacy in facilities is the biggest challenge in obtaining basic education for the children in rural villages. According to a study, more than 30% of educational funds are allocated towards higher education, leaving the primary education in sway. Mostly, the agricultural labour are not able to educate their children as they cannot afford the basic facilities required for a student. The rate of school drop-outs amongst students is very high and one of the main reasons behind this is poverty. When earning a livelihood and taking care of the members of the family becomes a primary matter of concern in one’s life, education stands a little or, very often, no chance of pursuance and it is assumed to be a high-priced luxury. Nowadays, most of the families who are at the edge of the poverty line are sending their children to private schools i.e., convents etc., even at the cost of their day to day livelihood, aiming and expecting that the gain from private is more profitable for their children in facing the challenges in life. Keeping all these issues in view, the family of beloved Raghavendra has decided to dedicate their earnings for the following three primary needs: Healthcare, Drinking water, Education.
Smt N. Krishnaveni, the mother of Raghavendra and Kum Bhavani Nagasai, sister and other family members have diverted their misfortune to serve the public in villages who are in need, basically, on the above said items.
After formation of Charitable Trust, around 1,000 patients have been sponsored by Multispecialty Hospitals for further treatments and around 2,000 students in primary education have been provided with notebooks, school bags and other infrastructure as required from time to time.
Computer teaching assistance was provided to the local schools by hiring B. Tech graduates to train the secondary school students in the neighbouring schools. Two work shops were conducted on soft skills for the secondary school students and English dictionaries were distributed for the 9th and 10th standard students to help improve their vocabulary.
Cricket and volley ball kits were distributed to the local youth to continue the sporting dream of Raghavendra.
It may not be out of place to mention that around 30 out-patients are getting treatment at free medical hospital headed by Dr. Poduru Krishna Murthy, MBBS (1970), one RMP Doctor and one Lady Assistant. Free medicines as per the requirement are being distributed every day without hesitation.
A mega medical camp was conducted with the help of Ashram Hospitals, Eluru and it was used by around 700 people in the neighbouring villages.
In regards to providing safe and pure drinking water to the village , the trust has taken over the “Nandi Foundation” water plant and proving purified water to the villagers at very nominal rates. The quality of the drinking water has been improved, ever-since it has been under the control of this charitable trust, through regular water sampling tests and maintenance work at the facility.
